Betts Group wins ‘Ethical Jewellery Business of the Year’ at UK Jewellery Awards

The Betts Group has been recognised for its ethical and sustainable approach to business at this year’s UK Jewellery Awards.

The family-run precious metal firm won ‘Ethical Jewellery Business of the Year’ at the UK’s longest running and most established industry awards event.

The award recognises the Group’s strong strategic focus on both social and environmental impact and sustainability and in particular its industry-leading use and promotion of Single Mine Origin (SMO) gold.

Earlier this month, the Betts Group revealed that it is using SMO gold in all of its manufactured gold products. Sourced from the Yanfolila gold mine in Mali, SMO certified gold provides an auditable chain of custody for the entire supply chain, with full segregation from mine to finished product.

Betts Group first began offering SMO gold in 2018 as part of its complete service proposition to jewellers, including refining services and a wide range of products and sundries such as grain, sheet, wire, bullion, ethical wedding rings, jewelers’ tools and bespoke investment products.

Batch codes and QR codes offer consumers a direct link to the source of the metal used in their purchase, as well as giving an insight into the impact each purchase has helped to create through community and environmental projects.

Betts Group managing director, Charlie Betts, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to have won such a prestigious industry award. Material provenance is probably the single greatest focus of the Group's strategy with the introduction of SMO gold and continued partnerships with FairTrade and Fair Mined Gold. SMO is squarely focused on having a transparent chain of custody for metal that is sourced from a responsibly operated mine, compliant with strict CSR and environmental standards. We believe this should be a priority across the industry rather than a product attracting a high premium that only certain niche jewellers are prepared to pay for, hence not charging any premium for SMO gold.”

This year’s virtual event was held in association with headline partner Clogau together with sponsors De Beers Group Industry Services, Hockley Mint, International Jewellery London, Nivoda, Pursuit, TH March and WOLF. It was supported by the National Association of Jewellers.
