KHIRY FINE launching exclusively at NET-A-PORTER

The UK’s oldest surviving precious metal refining and dealing business has given its backing to Jameel Mohammed, an exciting black artist and creator who is set to launch his first fine jewellery collection at NET-A-PORTER.

Precious metals expert, The Betts Group, has sponsored Jameel’s first fine jewellery collection, as part of The Vanguard, NET-A-PORTER’s globally renowned program for emerging designer talent.

The historic family-run firm has provided Single Mine Origin (SMO) gold to realise the KIHIRY FINE collection, which has been made using responsibly sourced gold from the Yanfolila mine in Mali.

Founded in 2016, KHIRY channels the beauty, art, heritage and culture of the African diaspora into modern, luxurious jewellery. The new collection follows a mentorship with fellow fine jewellery brand Mateo and sponsorship from two other brands, Hearts on Fire and Muzo Emerald Colombia.

NET-A-PORTER will exclusively showcase the debut of KHIRY’s fine jewellery offering, which comprises a range of essential styles and specific sculptural silhouettes, rendered in 18-carat gold and a variety of precious stones.

Betts Group’s managing director, Charlie Betts, said: “We’re thrilled to support Jameel’s first fine jewellery collection through supplying SMO gold on consignment. It is very inspiring to see a young, black artist celebrating African culture by using precious metal mined responsibly, from a single source in Mali. As a business we have always taken a pioneering approach to exploring new ideas and pushing boundaries. We are proud to champion emerging talent in our industry and are delighted to support Jameel and NET-A-PORTER through such a prestigious program as The Vanguard.”

Jameel Mohammed, KHIRY FINE, said: “Doing this project is indicative that the industry and the world is changing. The other cause for hope, is not merely in the reception we receive as designers but the strength we build together. Mateo has helped to move my business forward by years. This is a moment of empowerment, it’s a collaboration of black and non-black creators that can and will be the site of change. This is where it starts.”

The Betts Group was formed in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter at the dawn of the industrial revolution. Now in its ninth generation of family ownership, the business is at the forefront of creating fully traceable, responsibly sourced gold. Launched in 2018, SMO certified gold provides an auditable chain of custody for the entire supply chain, with full segregation from mine to finished product. It is increasingly used by a growing number of jewellers nationwide, including Boodles which has recently announced its commitment to using SMO gold in all its gold jewellery pieces.
