The Betts Group is a certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC)

The UK’s oldest surviving precious metal dealing and refining business is now a certified member of the RJC, which is the world's leading sustainability standard setting organisation for the jewellery and watch industry.

The RJC carried out a comprehensive audit of each of the Betts Group’s three sites, included within the audit was full verification of our three provenance claims as shown below: strengthening our commitment to responsible sourcing within the industry.

SMO Gold

In 2018, we launched Single Mine Origin (SMO) Gold, which is guaranteed to have been sourced from a mine with no ties to conflict. Every ounce of our gold can be traced to mines that are accredited with the highest responsibility standards. These mines provide vital social, environmental, and cultural support to local communities.

The RJC audit confirmed that Single Mine Origin (SMO) Gold is gold that can be directly traced to a specific gold mine that has been independently certified to an internationally recognised responsibility standard such as the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA), or Responsible Gold Mining Principles (RGMPs).

The SMO QR code shows customers where their gold was mined, the journey it has taken, and the positive impact it has made along the way.

AgAIN Silver

In 2022, we introduced AgAIN silver, which is recycled from medical X-ray film. AgAIN helps hospitals to earn money from old X-rays which would normally be stored or sent to landfill. It also provides customers with a fully traceable and sustainable silver supply. Furthermore, it helps the planet by recycling every element of the X-rays, minimising AgAIN’s carbon footprint.

The RJC audit verified that AgAIN silver is solely sourced and recycled from medical X-ray films in the UK. This is controlled through agreements in place with the medical trusts and hospitals.

Fairtrade and Fairmined Gold

Fairtrade is an independent and ethical certification that aims to ensure Fairtrade Gold is responsibly mined. It tackles issues like child labour and dangerous working conditions head on. Buying Fairtrade certified gold means that artisanal and small-scale miners are getting a fairer deal.

Fairmined is an assurance label that certifies gold from responsible artisanal and small-scale mining organisations. It transforms mining into an active force for good, ensuring social development and environmental protection, and providing everyone with a source of gold to be proud of.

The audit verified that the Betts Group sells responsibly mined artisanal and small-scale gold that is Fairtrade or Fairmined certified, as a Fairtrade or Fairmined licensee.

Based on the findings of the audit, the Betts Group has received a 3 Year Certification.
